Far From the Tree Productions

Far From The Tree Productions is a grassroots theatre company based in Vancouver. Founders Shel and Joelle Wyminga grew up putting on plays by the fireplace in their parents’ living room, unaware that there was a world of theatre outside the confines of the local elementary school Christmas concert. In the intervening years the wind has carried them far from the pine trees of the Cariboo, and, many melodramatic recitations and countless costume changes later, they are still telling stories together.

We endeavor to create honest, intimate theatre that explores the complexity of human relationships, particularly those bonds within family whether defined by blood, choice, or circumstance.

We believe that the magic of theatre exists in the intimate relationship between audience and performer, created through truthful storytelling. Our work seeks to simplify, making use of theatrical convention rather than spectacle so that character, story, and the exercise of imagination are emphasized.
