Making A Scene

Since 2000, GVPTA has produced the annual Making A Scene conference, which has been essential to building and maintaining a community that fosters support, understanding and a common goal of strengthening the local theatre industry. Through presentations, working sessions and plenty of opportunity for social gathering, the day-long conference offers attendees the chance to delve into discussions with colleagues, friends and new acquaintances, all of whom are passionate about theatre.

Making A Scene generally happens each spring. Anyone who is interested about theatre and the performing arts is invited! Whatever your connection to theatre – on stage, back stage, or off stage – you are invited. Whether you are a thespian, a volunteer, a theatre student, an arts manager, an administrator, a critic, a technician, an artist of any shape, size or discipline, you are ALL invited.

The 2018 conference was held in collaboration with the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture and produced as Unrestricted.

2019 marks the 20th annual Making A Scene conference. Primary conference programming takes place on May 28 and is co-hosted by SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs at SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts in Vancouver. Special activities and standalone workshops take place as an extension of the conference on May 29 and 30 at The Post at 750 in Vancouver. Learn more here

The Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance (GVPTA) strives to strengthen the local theatre industry. We do this through providing services, promotion of member news and community events, opportunities to connect and network, and our annual theatre conference. Together with our members we are raising the profile of local theatre and building community.

At GVPTA, we acknowledge that our organization is located on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
