Job posting: Gateway Theatre hiring for 3 summer positions (application deadline April 7)

Gateway Theatre is looking for three youth (ages 15-30) to fill summer positions that are funded through Canada’s Summer Works program. 

The successful applicants must:

·         be legally entitled to work in Canada

·         be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada

·         be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment

·         be a full-time student with the intention of returning to full-time studies in the fall

·         be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment for a period of 16 weeks

·         not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week)

·         not be attending full-time classes while carrying out this job

Hours of work: 35 hrs/week. Office hours are 9am – 5pm (with one hour unpaid lunch break).

The hours will vary – some evening and weekend work may be required.  Salary: $10.85/hour

1. Summer Intern position – Education

Reporting directly to the Education Manager and working closely with the Education Coordinator, Academy Summer Faculty and students, the Intern will assist in administration, production and summer camp support. Expectations and goals will be set out by the Education Manager, who will train the Intern in communicating the Academy’s programs and requirements to families and students. The Education Intern will also learn to address the needs of the instructors and students within both class and production/presentation contexts. 

Duties may include:

·                  Processing student registrations for summer and year-long classes

·                  Coordination of Academy auditions and summer volunteers

·                  Summer Camp student supervision

·                  Assisting with Academy presentations or productions

·                  Event planning

·                  Maintenance of Academy’s library and inventory

·                  Data entry and record keeping (utilizing database software)

·                  Communications projects and Academy promotion

·                  Other duties as required by supervisor               

Necessary qualifications:

·                  Interest and experience in arts education for youth

·                  Experience in and understanding of theatre and  theatre production

·                  Superior detail orientation and organizational skills

·                  Superior interpersonal communication skills

·                  Computer skills in Microsoft Office suite

·                  Ability to work independently and in a team

·                  Must have or be willing to obtain an RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check (to work with children) 


·                  Post-secondary study in Education, Arts Administration or Theatre (performance and production)

·                  Knowledge of a second language, ideally, Cantonese or Mandarin

2. Summer Intern position – Marketing and Development

Reporting directly to the Marketing and Sales Manager and the Development Manager, the Intern will assist with the execution of Gateway’s subscription and Academy registration campaigns, and the planning of our single ticket campaign.  The Intern will research individual, in-kind, and corporate partners for Gateway Theatre and learn how to create fundraising campaigns for individual donors and corporate sponsorships.

Duties may include:

·                  Researching and writing copy for proposals, letters to donors, and membership newsletters

·                  Assisting in organizing corporate sponsorship events and various Board fundraising activities

·                  Work with designers to help create fundraising collateral materials

·                  Audience segmentation and Cultural industries market research

·                  Distribution of marketing collateral throughout the Lower Mainland

·                  Other duties as required by supervisor 

Necessary qualifications:

·                  Superior written and oral communication skills

·                  Superior detail orientation and organizational skills

·                  Sales or customer service experience

·                  Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Excel

·                  Ability to work independently


·                  Post-secondary training in Marketing or Communications, Arts Administration, Fundraising and Non-Profit Management, Business and/or the cultural industries

·                  Prior volunteer or work experience in fundraising

·                  Prior volunteer or work experience in a not-for-profit environment

·                  Event planning and/or community outreach experience

·                  Familiarity with Theatre Manager or other database software

·                  Knowledge of a second language, ideally, Cantonese or Mandarin

3. Summer Intern position – Artistic/Production

Reporting to the Artistic Associate, the Artistic Intern will assist with season preparations for the professional productions in the Main Stage, Studio, and Pacific Festival for 2017 as well as supporting production maintenance and rental clients.  

Duties may include:

·         Organizing and facilitating auditions

·         Creating and writing content for programs and events

·         Liaising with artists, contractors, and/or rental clients for the 2017‐2018 season

·         Archival of production materials

·         Script library upkeep

·         Coordinating translation materials

·         Outreach at community special events

·         Data entry and record keeping

·         Supporting the Rentals Manager

·         Assisting with stage equipment maintenance

·         Other duties as required by supervisor

Necessary qualifications:

·         Excellent written and oral communication skills

·         A keen interest in and understanding of theatre production

·         Excellent organizational and multi‐tasking skills

·         Computer skills in Microsoft Office suite

·         Proven ability to balance individual initiative with working as part of a dynamic team

·         Superior organization skills and attention to detail 


·         Strong writing skills

·         Experience with copy-writing
